It’s always nice to enjoy a nice sunny day, but too much time in the sun can cause harmful effects to your body.  Ultraviolet rays are dangerous rays that are given off by the sun. They can cause skin cancer, sunburn and even eye problems.  So how can you protect yourself from these rays but still enjoy the sun?

1.  The sun is strongest between 11 AM and 4 PM.  Try to limit your exposure during these times and if you need to be outside, stay in the shade.

2.  Wear a hat when you will be in the sun for awhile or use an umbrella to protect yourself.

3.  Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when you are outside, even in the colder months. You need to put sunscreen on 15-20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.

4.  Wear sunglasses that have UVB and UVA protection to protect your eyes.  They should say UV 400 or be labeled 100% UV protection. Make sure your children also wear sunglasses.

5.  If your going to be swimming, remember that water reflects the sunlight. Make sure you have on waterproof sunscreen and don’t stay in the water for too long.

6.  Stay away from indoor tanning beds.  They have been linked to skin cancer such as melanoma and can damage skin severely.

While you should enjoy the sun from time to time, be sure to follow the above tips to minimize your risk of exposure to harmful rays.
