Summer is a popular time for people to take a vacation.  As you prepare for your trip, don’t forget to protect your home before you leave.  The worst water damage can occur to a home when a homeowner is out of town.  Leaky pipes and appliances, dripping water heaters, AC leaks and frozen or bursting pipes are just a few common things that can cause water damage. Follow these tips to avoid coming home to a disaster!

1.  Turn off your Water

The best and easiest way to avoid water damage while away is to turn off your main water valve.  If your not sure where it is located, than now is the time to find out! Inform everyone in your house as well, in case you ever need to quickly shut it off.  After you turn it off, be sure to run a faucet to test it.  If you need to leave your water on for any reason, turn off the valves to toilets, washing machine, dishwasher and any other major appliances.

2.  Check Pipes and Appliances

Check the pipes in your home for any cracks or leaks.  Be sure to caulk or fix any areas that look damaged.  Also check the hoses to your appliances to make sure there are no holes or kinks in them.  You will want to replace any hose that is damaged.

3.  Check Gutters

Make sure your gutter is clean before you leave.  Get rid of any debris or leaves that could cause your gutter to clog and overflow. Check for any blockages and be sure to fix them if you see any.

4. Have a Neighbor Check on Your House

Ask a neighbor to check on your home when you go away.  Especially if you will be gone for a long period of time.  Show them where the main water valve is as well. You will feel better knowing that someone is keeping an eye on things for you.
