Do you know what to look for when it comes to a failing water heater? The average water heater can last up to fifteen years, however after about ten years, your water heater will start to decline. Most people have no idea when their water heater is starting to go downhill. That is why we want you to know the five warning signs that you need a new water heater.

Unusual noises

Over time, sediment can accumulate in the bottom of your water heater. When the sediment is heated and reheated it starts to harden. When this starts to occur, your water heater may start making strange rumbling noises. The hardened sediment makes your tank less efficient. This is because it can cause the metal in your tank to crack or or create holes and lead to leaks.

Rusty Colored Water

Rusty water means that your heater is starting to corrode inside, which means its time to go. The only way that rusty water is not a sign of a bad water heater is if you have galvanized pipes.  To find out which it is, drain water into multiple buckets. If the water is still rusty when you get to the third bucket than it is time for a new tank.

Cold Water

If your water is not heating up like it should, this means it is less efficient. Older water heaters have a harder time creating hot water, so if this is happening this is a huge warning sign.

Age of Your Water Heater

As stated above, the age of your water heater should be considered when thinking about replacing it. To find out the age, look at the serial number. It should start with a letter, the letter indicates the month it was made and after that is the year.  If you tank is ten years or older than you need to consider replacing it.

Signs Of Water Around It

If you see any water around your water heater, this is a sign of a fracture or crack in the heater. Over time, your water heater can expand and this can create those cracks. Water around the heater can also come from the line, fittings or connections so check it to be sure.
